All You Need to Know | Heated Styling Tools On Hair Extensions
Styling your new hair extensions for the first time can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’ve had lots of lengths added. Investing in high-quality hair styling tools is worth it even if all you’re styling is your own hair, but especially important with hair extensions. Taking care of your new luscious locks will make your hair extensions last longer so make sure you’re blowing, waving, and curling with the best of them!
CAN I USE HEATED STYLING TOOLS WITH MY HAIR EXTENSIONS
The short answer is - yes, but don’t reach for your curling wand just yet. If your hair extensions are 100% human hair, you can use the right heated tools to style your hair extensions, because human hair extensions naturally have more flexibility and can take the heat. Our Futura Fibre hair can also be heated up to 180 degrees.
The polymer based synthetic hair extensions are not able to withstand high temperatures and by using heated styling tools, including hair dryers you can permanently damage them.
HOW TO USE HEATED STYLING TOOLS WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS
Inappropriate use of heated tools on your hair extensions can lead to melting and permanently damaging them. Make sure you never apply any heat to any bonding glue, lace or silk bases of your hair extensions to prevent melting. Just like with your natural hair, applying appropriate protection before styling is essential. Using a heat protection spray or serum will reduce heat related damage and preserve and extend the lifespan of your hair extensions.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HEATED STYLING TOOLS
When on the lookout for new heated tools to style your hair extensions, opt for the ones with ceramic plates or tourmaline plates that will help you achieve the sleek look without damaging your hair. Ceramic and tourmaline plates are super smooth and glide down the strands smoothly, helping you achieve the desired look with less heat. Additionally, we recommend to only use a low heat setting, as anything higher runs the risk of permanent damage.
HEATED STYLING TOOLS SAFE TO USE ON HAIR EXTENSIONS
BLOW DRYER WITH A DIFFUSER
It is safe to use a blow dryer to dry and style your hair extensions, but make sure you’re taking the right precautions. It’s a big no-no to start styling while your hair is still wet as sometimes the hair extensions ends may melt the keratin if exposed to really high heat. Make sure your hair is at least 80% dry before you brush it. Blow dry your hair extensions on a cool setting, starting from the roots and working your way to the ends by pointing the hair dryer nozzle down for best results. Using a blow dryer with a diffuser ensures a more evenly distributed flow of air to roots and avoid over-dying.
HOT AIR HAIR BRUSH
If you’d rather leave blow drying your locks to professionals, investing in a high-quality hot air hair brush is something worth considering. A hair brush with a built in hair dryer is much easier to use and helps you achieve the desired look faster, especially if you’re not exceptionally skilled when it comes to styling. And, as an added bonus, hot air brushes help add more volume!
HAIR STRAIGHTENERS
Nothing beats sleek and glossy hair, and it’s good news that you can use your ol’ hair straightener to style your hair extensions. However, we do not recommend doing so on a low-heat setting as you’ll have to go over a single strand multiple times in order to achieve the desired look, causing permanent heat damage to both your natural hair and your hair extensions. Try different temperature settings before you find the one that is the most suitable and effective.
CURLING WANDS/BARREL WAVERS
Just like with hair straighteners, curling wands are safe to use on your hair extensions but it might take some time before you get it just right. Depending on the type of curls you’re after, you might have to play around with adjusting the temperature, as well as how tightly you wrap the hair around the wand and hold it there. Curling hair extensions can slightly differ from curling your natural hair, so test it out first with small amounts of hair.
While heated styling tools are safe to use on hair extensions, we highly recommend giving both your natural hair and your hair extensions a break from the heat every now and then. Let your hair dry naturally whenever possible, and don’t forget to apply heat protecting products before using any heated styling tool, including hair dryers.
